Join us for a very special evening with photographer Martin Parr and actor Michael Sheen.
They will be discussing Martin’s work and his long-standing relationship to Wales, which is reflected in his current exhibition, Martin Parr in Wales, on display at National Museum Cardiff until 4th May 2020.
Martin Parr is British documentary photographer and collector. Over the last forty years, he has recorded people, places and cultures in the UK and beyond, exploring themes of leisure, consumption and communication. His humorous and affectionate portrayal of modern life has changed the way we understand society and its many nuances. Parr has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1994 and has exhibited and published internationally. He opened the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol in 2017, which houses his own extensive archive and supports and preserves the legacy of photographers who made and continue to make important works focused on the British Isles.
Michael Sheen has proved himself equally accomplished on both stage and screen. His many award-winning stage performances include Caligula and Frost/Nixon at the Donmar Warehouse, and Hamlet at the Young Vic. He created, co-directed, and performed in the groundbreaking three-day live event The Passion in Port Talbot for National Theatre Wales.
Sheen has starred in three films nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award: The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears, Frost/Nixon, directed by Ron Howard, and Midnight in Paris, directed by Woody Allen.
On television, Sheen has earned multiple awards and nominations for his performances. Most recently Michael has appeared in Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens for Amazon and BBC and The Good Fight for CBS. Currently Michael is starring as the lead role in Fox’s Prodigal Son and can next be seen in as Chris Tarrant in ITV and AMC’s Quiz, directed by Stephen Frears about the ITV Who Wants To Be A Millionaire coughing scandal.
Widely recognised as an equally effective activist, through his role as UNICEF Ambassador, Patron of Social Enterprise UK, President of the Wales Centre for Voluntary Action and many other roles, Michael is now branching out to start his own social movements. In March last year he launched the ‘End High Cost Credit Alliance’, aimed at tackling the unfair targeting of high cost credit to those who can least afford it. Additionally, in July 2019 Michael brought the Homeless World Cup to Cardiff, working to create a legacy which has a real impact on people’s lives long after the final whistle is blown. More than 500 players representing over 50 countries travelled to Cardiff to attend the week-long festival of football, in what was one of the most inspiring Homeless World Cup tournaments yet.
